PETALING JAYA: All economic sectors in Klang can continue to operate during the conditional motion control order (MCO), says Datuk Seri Azmin Ali.
“The National Security Council (NSC) decided today (October 8) to allow all economic sectors in Klang district to continue to operate as usual under strict adherence to standard operating procedures,” the Industry Minister said on Thursday. and International Trade in a statement (October 8).
He said the decision was made after he informed the NSC about his previous conversations with Selangor Health Director Datuk Indera, Dr. Sha’ari Ngadiman, about the situation in the district and the steps taken to curb the spread of Covid-19.
“Selangor contributes 24% to the national gross domestic product (GDP) and 30% to the country’s manufacturing sector.
“In terms of manpower, there are almost 3.5 million workers in Selangor, which represents 23.2% of the workforce of the entire country.
“The Klang district is also a hub for industrial activities and a main hub for container port activities, with Port Klang contributing more than RM400 thousand in economic business activities in 2019,” he said.
Azmin said that the decision also took into account the economic importance of the district and at the same time ensures the safety of public health.
“The government’s decision takes into account the need to protect both lives and livelihoods,” he said.
He added that the government is also aware that many companies, including small and medium-sized companies, have taken steps to implement safety and health protocols in their respective workplaces since the reopening of economic sectors in early March this year.
However, Azmin warned that companies or SMEs that fail to comply with the preventive measures of Covid-19 will be ordered to immediately cease operations and face legal action.
He said law enforcement authorities have been instructed to ensure compliance with standard operating procedures.
Under the conditional MCO, residents can travel outside of the affected areas to work.
Restaurants, food shops and stalls, miscellaneous stores, and convenience stores can operate between 6 a.m. and 11 p.m.
Service stations will also be able to operate between 6 am and 11 pm.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri clarified on Thursday that the conditional MCO did not cover the entire Klang district, but only the Klang mukim or sub-district.
