PETALING JAYA: The Ministry of Education will close 122 schools starting Tuesday (October 6) in Kota Kinabalu, Penampang and Putatan, Sabah due to the conditional movement control order (MCO).
The ministry said it takes note of the Cabinet’s decision to implement the conditional MCO in these areas as of Wednesday (October 7).
He said this will involve 86 elementary schools, 25 high schools and 11 private schools.
Earlier, the government announced that a conditional MCO has been established for the Kota Kinabalu, Penampang and Putatan districts in Sabah, which will begin on Wednesday at 12:01 am following an increase in Covid-19 cases.
Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said this was decided at a special cabinet meeting where the current Covid-19 situation in Sabah was discussed with the Ministry of Health and the Sabah state government.
“Movement in and out of the conditional MCO areas is strictly prohibited. Only essential services are allowed, including factories and supply chains related to necessary services. The Ministry of Industry and International Trade (Miti) will provide a list of services that will be needed in the affected areas, ”he said.
However, schools outside of the areas affected by the conditional MCO will operate as usual following an earlier press statement from the Ministry of Education on October 3.
“The Ministry of Education realizes the concern of parents and school members regarding the spread of Covid-19.
“In this matter, the ministry will continue to monitor the situation throughout the country and will continue to work closely with the National Security Council and the Ministry of Health to provide the best protection in terms of health and safety,” he added.
