KUALA LUMPUR: Workplace accidents, such as the recent gas inhalation incident, could be avoided if all established safety measures are followed, said Ikatan Komuniti Selamat (IKATAN) President Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye. (pix)

“The employer or designated contractor must assume the responsibility of ensuring that their workers have qualification certificates and have attended Occupational Health and Safety courses.

“This can increase the awareness and skills of employees in carrying out this risky work and thus prevent any incidents that could threaten their lives,” he told Bernama today.

In addition, he said that workers who work in closed spaces such as the sewage plant must have special equipment that can detect the presence of toxic gases.

At the same time, Lee hopes that the Department of Occupational Safety and Health can play a proactive role in monitoring every job performed in hazardous locations to ensure it meets established standard operating procedures (SOPs).

In the 3.30pm incident, three men died after inhaling gas while cleaning a sewage plant in Jalan Pantai Permai 1, Pantai Dalam here.

The two locals and a Bangladeshi were employed by a cleaning contractor. -Called
