TAWAU: Former Vice President of Gerakan Rakyat Malaysia (Gerakan), Liew Yun Fah, has confirmed that he will compete for the Merotai state seat in the Sabah state elections on September 26.

Liew, who held the seat for a period after the 2004 general election, said he is back in the fray because he wanted to speed up development in the constituency, which he felt was too slow.

This time, he said, it would be on a local party ticket launching next week.

“I will lead this group whose members will include natives of Merotai and Tawau.

“This party has several candidates who will compete for more than one seat, be it in Tawau or Kalabakan,” he said when meeting with reporters here today.

Liew had previously joined Amanah and submitted his membership form to the party chairman, Mohamad Sabu, in December 2018.

After Liew, Pang Yuk Ming of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) held the seat for two terms. In the 14th general election of 2018, Sarifuddin Hata de Warisan won the seat.
