MORE than 400,000 people will be affected by the conditional movement control order (MCO) imposed in Mukim 12 (sub-district 12) in the southwestern district of Penang Island starting today.
“The total population comprises the residents and those who travel there for work,” Penang Island City Council (MBPP) Mayor Datuk Yew Tung Seang said at a news conference.
He said that in addition to the Bayan Lepas Free Industrial Zone, the affected areas also comprised more than 40,000 residences and about 13,000 commercial units including hotels, complexes, offices and factories.
Yew said all public parks in Subdistrict 12 were closed to discourage large groups from gathering and hosting social events there during the conditional MCO.
“We are thinking of closing the Relau Metropolitan Park, which is located outside the sub-district, but is a popular location for those who live within the sub-district.
“Other parks outside of Subdistrict 12 may be closed on the advice of the state Department of Health, following the closure of the Japanese Garden in Island Park and a playground in Esplanade,” he said.
Earlier, state executive councilor Jagdeep Singh Deo said that more than 5,000 MBPP and Seberang Prai City Council (MBSP) workers would be on the ground monitoring the rate of compliance with standard operating procedures.
Jagdeep said that a total of 11,315 people had been tested in the four Covid-19 clusters in Penang: Penang Pretrial Detention, Seberang Prai Prison, Bayan and Alma.
Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the MCO’s conditional measure was necessary for the ministry to conduct specific tests in the area due to the Covid-19 Bayan cluster.
Subdistrict 12 comprises Bayan Baru, Sungai Ara, Batu Maung, Desa Ria and all phases of the Free Industrial Zone.
As of Tuesday, 35 positive cases of Covid-19 have been recorded in the sub-district, including 11 new cases.
