PETALING JAYA: The National Association of Patriots (Patriot) has asked former Bank Negara Malaysia Governor Zeti Akhtar Aziz to clear the air about his alleged involvement in the 1MDB scandal.
A recent blog post claimed that Zeti’s family members had received more than RM100 million from fugitive businessman Low Taek Jho, better known as Jho Low, which included funds from 1MDB.
Patriot Chairman Mohamed Arshad Raji said that regardless of whether Malaysia Today, the blog that made the claim, was trustworthy, “in view of the possible ramifications caused by the allegations, Zeti cannot remain silent. You must clarify things immediately. “
“These are very serious allegations and threaten the integrity of our central bank as well as our financial institutions,” he said in a statement today.
“Patriot has mentioned before and would like to repeat that we have zero tolerance for corruption in senior positions. A person who is guilty of corruption, regardless of the position he occupies, must be treated seriously. “
Former Prime Minister Najib Razak previously alleged that Zeti suggested that he open a personal account to receive foreign funds that were ultimately linked to the 1MDB scandal.
On Tuesday, Najib recalled that Zeti issued a statement after the 14th general election stating that he was unaware of the existence of funds or transactions in his BNM account.
However, Arshad said: “There is no way that Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) is not aware that such huge sums of money are going into a personal account.
“Even if the funds were from personal donations, the due diligence should have been carried out regardless (of whether) a minister had said they had met with the donor (s) of the fund.
“Bank Negara makes autonomous decisions. Bank Negara officials do not answer to the politicians of the ruling parties.
“A thorough investigation must be carried out and no stone must be left unturned. Patriot and the public are eager to know the outcome of the investigation. “
Arshad’s call comes a day after Umno Youth filed a police report against Zeti and his family for their alleged involvement in the 1MDB scandal.
Executive committee member Shahrul Nasrun Kamaruddin said the police report would allow authorities to open investigations and provide a detailed report on the allegations.
He hoped that the police and the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission would prioritize the issue.
