Claims that 90% of Covid-19 Positive Cases Visited Klang Valley Malls Are Fake News

KUALA LUMPUR: Senior Minister (Security Group) Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob today refuted a claim that nearly 90 percent of those who tested positive for Covid-19 were people who visited shopping malls around the Klang Valley.

As such, he advised members of the public not to share unverified information and to always verify the authenticity of any news they receive.

“Measures can be taken against those who spread false information and news,” he said today at a virtual press conference via the Defense Ministry’s Facebook page.

Ismail Sabri also urged the public to consult the Rapid Response Team of the Ministry of Communications and Multimedia (KKMM) by calling 03-89115103 or visiting www.sebenarnya.my to verify the authenticity of any news received.

The fake news claiming that 90 percent of Covid-19 positive cases comprised those who had visited shopping malls around the Klang Valley made their rounds on social media today.

Meanwhile, Ismail Sabri said that so far, the Royal Malaysian Police and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission have opened 273 investigative documents on the spread of fake news related to Covid-19.

He said that of the total, 136 cases were still under investigation, 35 cases had been indicted in court with 21 people found guilty, 13 were still on trial and another 12 received warning notices.

“The KKMM Rapid Response Team, which was established to curb the spread of fake news related to Covid-19, has also cleared up a total of 390 denials and explanations about fake news,” he said. -Called
