PUTRAJAYA: Citizens of 23 countries who are long-term pass holders are prohibited from entering Malaysia by the Immigration Department.

The ban, which came into effect yesterday, was imposed as these countries have recorded a high number of Covid-19 cases.

They are the United States, Brazil, India, Russia, Peru, Colombia, South Africa, Mexico, Spain, Argentina, Chile, Iran, Bangladesh and the United Kingdom.

Also on the list are Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, France, Turkey, Italy, Germany, Iraq, the Philippines and Indonesia.

The list was posted on the official Facebook of the Immigration Department last Friday.

While tourist arrivals have stalled since the movement control order (MCO) was enforced in March, the latest ban will affect long-term pass holders from all 23 countries.

This includes those with permanent resident status, Malaysia My Second Home (MM2H) participants, expats, and holders of professional visit passes.

The spouses of Malaysian citizens and students are also prohibited from entering.

On September 3, the government announced that it would impose an entry ban on citizens of countries that have more than 150,000 Covid-19 cases as of September 7.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said the government would add more high-risk countries to the list and their citizens would not be able to enter Malaysia.

However, for emergencies or cases involving bilateral relations, the Malaysian authorities will make an exception and allow these persons to enter.
