‘Feliz Navidad’ by José Feliciano has become a timeless festive pop song with its simple chorus in Spanish: “Feliz Navidad, prospero ano y feliz” (which means Merry Christmas, have a prosperous and happy year) and the verse in equally simple English “I wanna wish you have a Merry Christmas from the bottom of my heart.”

The 75-year-old blind Puerto Rican singer-songwriter said the idea of ’Feliz Navidad’ came about as a means of trying to bring people together.

“What I thought when I wrote the song was that it didn’t matter what language you sang in; the feeling of Christmas is something we all know, ”said the nine-time Grammy winner.

The melody has become one of the most played and recorded Christmas songs in the world.

Feliciano’s Christmas classic turned 50 last month, and he’s celebrating with a remake featuring 30 acts, including pop balladeer Michael Bolton, all of whom remotely teamed up for the reimagined track.
