Chinese customs seize poisonous live ants from package

CHANGSHA (Xinhua): Central Chinese customs said on Monday (December 21) that they seized live poisonous ants from a package sent from abroad.

Customs officials in Changsha, the capital of Hunan province, said they found four test tubes inside a package containing seven ants, likely bought by house ant lovers.

A laboratory identification suggested that the ants belong to four genera native to Australia and not distributed in China. They are large, very aggressive and toxic, according to customs.

Customs destroyed the parcel, saying the illegal entry of exotic species could spread disease and threaten the environment and agriculture.

China’s burgeoning e-commerce in recent years is contributing to the craze for exotic pets, such as snakes, insects, and lizards.

In November, customs officials in Zhengzhou, central China’s Henan Province, said they seized more than 600 live ants from a package shipped from Turkey.
