Chelsea’s summer signings Kai Havertz and Timo Werner scored and assists in Germany’s thrilling draw with Switzerland in the Nations League.

Switzerland took a 2-0 lead over Joachim Low’s team in Cologne on Tuesday night, but goals from Werner and Havertz brought Germany level.

Bayern Munich’s Serge Gnabry put the hosts ahead (Havertz provided the assist) before Switzerland scored the equalizer in injury time.

Havertz, who completed a £ 71 million move to Chelsea over the summer, said: ‘We came back after several setbacks and showed some character.

‘We are in the middle of a process and we are a young team. We will not allow them to deviate from the course and we will continue as we are.

“We need to defend better, but tonight there were a lot of positives.”

Werner, whom Chelsea signed from RB Leipzig in July, added on Instagram: ‘There were a lot of good times today! But there is still a lot of work ahead ”.

Meanwhile, Germany coach Low said: ‘It was a very high intensity game. Both parties took many risks, but there were also several mistakes.

“We started the game off badly, but showed real character to come back, which was good to see. However, we made several mistakes on defense.

“Our plan was to play with a certain element of risk, but we have to correct those mistakes. We fight hard to get back in the game.

‘You can learn a lot from setbacks. We need to improve our communication and instructions.

“When we go to the European Championship, our goal is to get as far as possible, but reaching the semi-finals is the minimum goal.

‘This team has a lot of potential. We need to correct some things, but then I think there is a lot to be excited about. ‘

Havertz and Werner will now return to Chelsea ahead of Saturday’s Premier League clash against Southampton.
