PETALING JAYA: DAP MP Kasthuri Patto has called for a nationwide audit on the functionality of closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras in police stations following the rape report of a 16-year-old girl in a dungeon in Miri, Sarawak.
He called for the findings to be released to the government and the public within a week.
In a statement today, the Batu Kawan MP said that while she welcomed Inspector General of Police Abdul Hamid Bador’s assurance that those responsible will be indicted in court, it was imperative that surveillance systems for all police stations.
Sarawak Police Commissioner Aidi Ismail had said that the CCTVs at Miri Central Police Station, where the incident allegedly took place, had no recording function and could only be monitored live by the duty officer.
Kasthuri said that this admission was a “revelation of the state of affairs of our police stations.”
He also asked why, despite the 16 billion ringgit allocated to the Interior Ministry in the 2021 federal budget, the police had only been allocated 8 million ringgit, “not to mention equipment such as cameras or CCTV.”
Under the Pakatan Harapan administration, he said, then-de facto law minister Liew Vui Keong announced RM73 million for police cells across the country to be equipped with CCTV for accountability and integrity.
“What is the status of the funds allocated and have they been used to purchase or upgrade CCTV for the country’s police stations?” she asked.
