Census rescheduled after spike in Covid-19 cases, says Tok Pa

PETALING JAYA: The second phase of the Population and Housing Census that will take place this month was rescheduled from January 20 to February 6, 2021 in light of the recent increase in Covid-19 cases in the country, said Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed.

The minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Economic Affairs) said the second phase, which involves face-to-face interviews, was originally scheduled for October 7-24, but had been rescheduled.

The first phase of the census, the electronic census and the computer-assisted telephone interviews, which ran until October 6 from September 30, will continue from October 7 to December 21, he added.

“During this period, people who have not yet completed the census form are encouraged to do so at https://www.mycensus.gov.my/. This is to reduce the number of face-to-face interviews to prevent the risk of Covid-19 infection, ”Mustapa said in a statement on Monday (October 5).

Mustapa said that the Census Act of 1960 (Revised 1969) requires members of the public to participate in the census and answer the questionnaire.

“Population and housing data are very important for the government to formulate policies for the well-being of the nation. This is to ensure that each plan meets the needs of the target groups and that no one is left out, ”he said.

Meanwhile, in a separate statement, chief statistician Datuk Seri Dr. Mohd Uzir Mahidin said that the rescheduling will also involve some strategies, including a pre-registration of the electronic census from October 7 to November 30 this year, while the last date to complete the electronic census will be December 21.

“Poskad’s identification from the electronic census will be sent to the selected areas and the final date for completing the electronic census will be December 21, 2020.

“The 2020 census is already on its 91st day based on responses received. A total of 3.25 million or 10% have participated compared to Malaysia’s estimated population of 32.7 million as of October 4,” he said.

According to him, Putrajaya registered the highest responses of the electronic census with a total of 62%, followed by Perak (17.4%), Johor (14%), Penang (13.6%), Negri Sembilan (12.3% ), Kuala Lumpur (11.6%). %) and Selangor (11.2%).

The poorest response was from Kelantan (4.1%), Sabah (4.3%), and Terengganu (4.6%).

Other states such as Perlis registered a total of 9.1% followed by Labuan (8.9%), Melaka (8.7%), Pahang (7.7%), Kedah (7.7%) and Sarawak (6, 5%), he said.
