KUALA LUMPUR: Celcom Axiata Bhd has suspended distributors who were unable to perform identity verification for new prepaid SIM card registrations in 2019.

“Celcom has taken immediate action to suspend responsible distributors and will continue to investigate their misconduct,” the company said in a statement today.

On Tuesday, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) issued 15 compounds worth RM700,000 against six telcos for registering prepaid SIM cards without verifying user information last year.

The companies were Celcom, Maxis, Tone Plus, Tune Talk, U Mobile, and YTL Communications.

In accordance with MCMC standards and regulations, Celcom said the company regularly practices self-regulation and self-policy for more than 10,000 third-party distributors across the country to increase awareness and general standards of practice.

“Celcom takes this matter seriously and strives to abide by the rules, policies and guidelines set forth by MCMC for prepaid SIM registrations,” he said. – Bernama
