KUALA LUMPUR: The Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) has proposed to the Attorney General’s Office to classify environmental pollution crimes as organized crimes and should be investigated under the Security Crimes (Special Measures) 2012 (SOSMA).

Inspector General of Police Tan Sri Abdul Hamid Bador (pix) said that the proposal would not only involve the contamination of Sungai Gong in Rawang but also all cases involving environmental contamination in the future.

“The Yang di-Pertuan Agong (Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah) has said that he seriously considered the problems that threaten people’s health,” he said at a press conference after a handover ceremony for four police departments. principals and the president of the Police Family Association (Perkep) at PDRM College in Cheras here today.

Abdul Hamid said the crime is a repeated felony and the police are studying the best legislation to deal with the culprits.

“As such, I ask people to be calm and patient as the police are still investigating the case. The investigation would be transparent and the police would have no interest in closing the case or reducing the degree of the crime, ”he said.

Commenting on the question of creating a special team for the investigation of environmental pollution, Abdul Hamid said that the matter is up to the Interior Ministry (KDN) to make a decision.

“No problem, we are prepared to accept this responsibility and we are confident that we will be able to assist the Ministry of the Environment with the establishment of additional posts in the police,” he said.

Abdul Hamid said the police had made a number of commitments, including handling the affairs of the Peninsular Malaysia Department of Wildlife and National Parks (Perhilitan), as well as carrying out tasks to curb major smuggling with the help of thousands of police officers.

“I believe that the burden of tasks will increase if the proposal of the Minister of Environment and Water (Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man) is approved by KDN, so I am looking for additional police positions.
