Caoimhin Kelleher stated that he is “not here just to participate” after impressing on his Champions League debut with Liverpool.

The Reds progressed to the knockout stages thanks to a 1-0 win over Ajax when Curtis Jones found the back of the net.

But it was Kelleher, 22, replacing the injured Alisson, who received applause late in the game for a key save.

The Republic of Ireland Under-21 player spoke to BT Sport after the match and spoke about his joy not just making his debut, but helping Liverpool advance to the round of 16.

“Obviously it was amazing for me to debut in the Champions League. It was great for me,” he told BT Sport. “The most important thing for us was to get the win and qualify and we did it.”

But perhaps the most striking part of the interview was the calm and collected nature that he exuded when discussing his key contributions during the contest.

He added: “That’s what I’m there for (to make stops). I’ve been working hard in practice and luckily I was able to make some good saves tonight.

Should Caoimhin Kelleher start for Liverpool against Wolverhampton Wanderers at the weekend? Let us know in the comments.

“It’s easy enough to be honest because of the players in front of me. They give me easy options when they give it back to me. That makes my decisions so much easier.

“We (young players) are not here just to participate. Before the game my phone was ringing. I’ve been getting a lot of messages and support and that has been great.

Kelleher entered the game as Liverpool’s third goalkeeper behind Alisson and Adrian.

Jurgen Klopp confirmed before the game that Alisson will be on the sidelines for up to two weeks.
