Can Umno be reformed? Do not hold your breath

YOUR OPINION | “Why has Umno failed to cheer up the Malays in the way he intended?”

MP SPEAKS | Can Umno have leaders with integrity again?

Kim Quek: DAP leader Lim Kit Siang has competently presented in a nutshell the current Malay dilemma that Malaysians, particularly Umno, must face with honesty and courage if they want the Malays and the nation to move forward and succeed.

While the seeds of a Umno-Pakatan Harapan cooperation seem to have been sown, perhaps this is the right time for Umno leaders to give some serious reflections on this issue, not only from the parish point of view of the party but, what more importantly, also from the point of view of the broader interests of the Malays and the country.

Why has Umno failed to cheer up the Malays in the way he intended? What is the best course of action to take now to achieve this elusive goal?

This is a rare moment in our history when major political forces are undergoing a realignment. Take advantage of this unique opportunity to do the right thing for our country and all of our people.

Vote4changejohor: The current government of Perikatan Nasional (PN) is going nowhere and is simply eager to continue “as usual”, which is not the aspiration of Malaysia’s multiracial community.

Therefore, the Umno-Harapan cooperation, as noted by Kim Quek, is timely. It will be able to implement more inclusive policies in line with the aspiration of all Malaysian citizens.

The leaders of the various political parties – Umno, PKR, DAP and Amanah – should seriously consider this opportunity to create a stable coalition in this current crisis.

Just a Malay: Can Umno have leaders with integrity again?

The short answer is no. Once you’ve tried easy money, it becomes an obsession and addiction. Do you see how the members of Umno yell and yell when challenged?

Prominority: The leaders of any party with baggage should never have the opportunity to return to politics. Once they know how to get rich, they will go back to the old ways of stealing money from the government.

We have seen it in many of them. At the time of the nomination, no candidate with a history of corruption should be entertained.

Coward: Never say never, but it will take time. Umno will transform. In which? Nobody knows.

Corporate entities like political parties do not have a natural life. They transform. It is usually an evolution, not a revolution.

Evolution is slow, so there are circumstances in which we will see a revolution. It requires a shock or a jolt, with the overthrow of the political party, especially the ruling party.

In this sense, Umno has missed his chance.

Shadows game: Lim, what you mentioned in the article will remain a dream as long as there are still racial parties like Umno, PAS, Bersatu, Amanah, Pejuang, MCA, MIC, etc.

These holidays are based on race and religion. They can form coalitions to diminish their racial identity, but their intention is to stay in power.

Therefore, as long as these politicians cannot think outside the box, our dream will remain a dream.

Sputnik M: Lim has expressed his opinion very well. While we agree on certain weaknesses in government policy, we as Malaysians must also agree that there should be changes in the private sector as well.

Why are we silent about it? We know what the chauvinists will say: since they are private companies, they have every right to choose and promote workers according to their preferences.

What about the moral obligations of these leaders who preach equal opportunity to all Malaysians? What about equal opportunity in the ruling DAP state in the north? Why can’t the Indian or Malaysian Deputy Minister be promoted to CM?

Please preach that to the DAP members. Then you can extend your success to all of Malaysia.

YellowKancil0051: The fact that the dominant politics in Malaysia are based on racial and religious parties is not a good sign.

A party that defends race and religion will be considered, at best, marginal or even extremist in countries like the UK, Australia and Singapore. Our colonial masters left us in this state and after more than 60 years, we have not advanced.

The 2021 budget still differentiates Malaysians by race rather than economic status. Both the government and opposition leaders speak of “protecting the Malays” as their priority. This leads to abuse as these leaders rule by instilling xenophobia.

If the opposition really wants a better Malaysia, then this is the first priority: uniting Malaysians. Malaysians must be recognized as one people. Reject all forms of racism. Write it in law.

This is truly the plague in Malaysian politics since independence, as it has distracted us from focusing on the bigger picture and core issues like improving education and fighting corruption.

People who talk about the former prime minister, Dr. Mahathir Mohamad, being the evil that plagues Malaysia, are missing the point. It is not he who is evil, it is what he stands for: racist politics.

Quo Vadis: Alas, rational thinking is an impossible dream, there is not a semblance, an iota of reason in the corridors of power where whatever hits the fan, frogs leap, chameleons change color, and witches stir the brew.
