ByteDance, the parent company of social media app TikTok, has apparently rejected Microsoft’s offer to buy its US operations. The issue was confirmed through a brief statement from Microsoft, stating that it had made some changes to its service in anticipation of the possible association.

On another note, it appears that ByteDance may be partnering with another American company, Oracle, although the exact nature of the new partnership is still shrouded in mystery. At the time of writing, Oracle has yet to release an official statement on the partnership.

Going back to Microsoft, the company did not specify what kinds of changes it had allegedly proposed to TikTok, but it is speculated that one of the reasons ByteDance pulled out of the deal is that it is reluctant to sell its reward algorithm to an American company. Selling it would mean giving said buyer access to the underlying code of the algorithm and the rights to rewrite it to better suit their needs and system.

Both Microsoft and ByteDance’s announcement are cutting it very close to the September 15 deadline set by US President Donald Trump. In summary, the man said that TikTok had to date to sell its US trading arm, otherwise it will result in the closure of the company within the country.

Unsurprisingly, the president has also expressed that he would like the US government to get a piece of any deal that is made between ByteDance and the US company it decides to sell TikTok to.
