KOTA KINABALU (Bernama): A businesswoman suffered more than heartbreak when she discovered that a love scam syndicate had recently scammed her of RM143,000.

Penampang District Police Chief DSP Mohd Haris Ibrahim said the 50-year-old woman claimed to have met her ‘boyfriend’ through Facebook.

“The businesswoman is believed to have been scammed by a love scam syndicate and was misled by the suspect, who told her that RM16.6mil he owned had been frozen.

“He then asked him for help in conducting a financial transaction, promising him a ‘reward,'” he said in a statement on Friday (November 13).

“The union’s modus operandi is to meet the victims on social media, speak sweetly to them to gain their trust, and then request an amount of money for various purposes.

“The number of love scam cases in Penampang has increased lately.

“Therefore, the public is advised to be careful when dealing with unknown persons,” he said, adding that the case would be investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for fraud. – Bernama
