BUTTERWORTH: A businessman was indicted on Monday (September 7) in a Court of Sessions here with two counts of bribery amounting to RM 615,000.
Chan Eng Leong, 46, pleaded not guilty after the charge was read before Judge Ahmad Azhari Abdul Hamid.
In the first count, Chan was charged with soliciting a bribe of US $ 150,000 (RM615,000 at the time of the crime) from Goh Choon Kim as an incentive for him to allegedly resolve the Goh Kim Heong case, which was said to be under investigation. of Bukit Aman under the Security Crimes (Special Measures) (Sosma) Act of 2012.
He was charged with committing the crime at the office of the Van Gohh Eminent Hotel, Jalan Machang Bubok 2, at approximately 5 p.m. between March 30 and March 31, 2019.
The charges are framed under Section 16 (a) (A) of the Malaysia Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act 2009 and are punishable under Section 24 (1) of the same act.
He faces a jail term of up to 20 years and a fine of not less than five times the amount of the bribe or RM10,000, whichever is greater.
In the second count, Chan was accused of receiving RM615,000 from the same person and for the same reason at Global Tobacco Manufactures Sdn Bhd, 1762, Jalan Bukit Teh, Machang Bubok, around 5 pm on April 1, 2019.
For this offense, he was charged under section 16 (a) (A) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act 2009, punishable under section 24 (1) of the same act.
Chan was represented by attorney RSN Rayer.
MACC Deputy Prosecutor S. Selvaranjini requested that bail be set at RM300,000 for the two charges.
Ahmad Azhari posted bail of RM250,000 on two bonds for both charges and ordered the defendant to hand over his passport to the court.
The accused also has to appear every month at the nearest MACC headquarters.
