Businessman denies causing the death of the police

KAJANG: A 44-year-old businessman demanded a trial in a Sessions Court here on a charge of drunk driving and killing a police officer in an obstacle two weeks ago.

K. Kalaichelvan was charged with driving under the influence and killing Kpl Safwan Mohamad Ismail, 31, who was driving the road blockade on the Lekas ​​Highway at 2.10 am on May 3 .

The offense under Section 44 (1) (B) of the Highway Transportation Act carries a prison sentence of between three and 10 years and a fine of up to RM20,000.

Kalaichelvan was also charged with another count of noncompliance with the police signal forcing him to stop at the barrier, an offense under Section 26 (2) of the Police Act.

For this crime, he faces imprisonment of up to 12 months or a fine of up to RM1,000 or both, if convicted.

For the third charge, Kalaichelvan was charged with driving without a license, an offense under Section 26 (1) of the Highway Transportation Act, and faces a fine of between RM300 and RM2,000 or imprisonment for up to three months or both, if pleaded guilty.

The defendant, who asked to have the charges read to him in Tamil, pleaded not guilty to the crimes.

Session Court Judge Mohd Kafli Che Ali set the bond at RM20,000 in a guarantee. The case will be mentioned on June 18.

In a separate court, Kalaichelvan sued for moving within an infected area on the same highway at 2 a.m. the same day.

He was charged in accordance with Rule 3 (1) of the Infectious Disease Prevention and Control Regulation (Measures within infected local areas), which carries a maximum fine of RM1,000 or up to six months in prison or both, after his sentence.

Magistrate Muhammad Noor Firdaus Rosli set bail of RM1,000 on a guarantee.

The case is set for mention on August 10.
