KOTA KINABALU: Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin (Photo) has urged Shell Malaysia to reconsider its plan to downsize its operations in Sabah.
Sabah’s chief deputy minister said it was a misstep as the state was dealing with the Covid-19 situation.
Bung Moktar, who is also the state’s Minister of Infrastructure Development, said he was commenting on a report on the oil and gas company’s plan to reduce the size of its Kota Kinabalu-based office.
“The Sabah government is seriously considering Shell Malaysia’s decision to reduce its operations in the state.
“I urged the company to reconsider, as it will bring an economic impact to the workers involved, in addition to affecting the economy of Sabah,” he said in a statement on Friday (October 23).
Instead, Shell Malaysia should work together with the state government to achieve a balanced economy rather than simply looking to Sabah as a source of profit, thus abandoning them when times are tough, he added.
“Shell is one of the oil companies that benefited a lot in this state through upstream and downstream activities.
“A plan should have been developed together with the state government while it faced the global pandemic instead of making their own,” he said.
A news portal reported that Shell Malaysia confirmed the exercise to reduce office operations here. The company did not provide a reason for the move.
