KUALA LUMPUR (Bernama): Bukit Aman’s Department of Integrity and Compliance has detected police involvement in the processing and sale of ketum juice, says its director Datuk Zamri Yahya.
He said the activities were detected because there were police personnel who had misused the residential barracks as a place to process and sell ketum juice.
“This is very worrying because the involvement of police personnel has never occurred and has never been detected before.
“In the past, there were reports of ketum ingestion among the staff, but now, it has shifted to the sales and processing activities, and they also hire others for around RM80 a day to sell it,” he told Bernama.
He said a series of arrests with more than 10 police officers suspected of being involved in the processing and sale of ketum juice have been made during several intelligence raids recently.
“Police personnel with the rank of sergeant or lower were detained at two locations here and at the Ulu Kinta General Operations Force (GOF) Northern Brigade Headquarters, Perak, which was used as a place to process juice from ketum.
“They are looking for clients and selling to them to earn extra money despite receiving a monthly salary as police officers,” he said.
Zamri also said that other police arrests were being made for alleged involvement in the abuse of police patrols for the purpose of smuggling ketum into Thailand.
“After that, the police are conducting active investigations to identify the extent of their involvement. This is what was found to be successful, not including those that have yet to be discovered,” he said.
According to Zamri, all personnel involved will be suspended or fired if found guilty. – Bernama
