PETALING JAYA: Many MPs would find themselves in a dilemma if they helped pass the 2021 budget, as it could be interpreted as support for the leadership of Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin, a Selangor BN leader said today.
Selangor BN’s chief information officer, Isham Jalil, believes that the president of PPBM could use such support to strengthen his position at Dewan Rakyat.
“It would be a ‘dead end’ situation for these MPs because their support for the budget could be used by Muhyiddin as a sign that he had majority support for Dewan Rakyat,” Isham said in a post on his Facebook page.
There has been intense speculation that MPs could vote against the budget, which would automatically lead to the resignation of Muhyiddin and his cabinet.
Isham repeated his call for Muhyiddin’s resignation and said it was also unreasonable to expect the next administration to implement a budget prepared by his predecessors.
“The current government and the prime minister are unstable. They don’t have strong majority support (or a majority at all) and will collapse at any moment.
“Therefore, it is very likely that the current Cabinet will not be present next year to implement the policies and expenditures that they prepared in the 2021 Budget,” he said.
“Even if Muhyiddin manages to get Budget 2021 approval in Parliament next month, political turmoil will continue and budget implementation will stunt, or be virtually impossible to implement, due to his unstable position.”
The 2021 budget will be presented at Dewan Rakyat on November 6.
Istana Negara yesterday rejected the government’s call to declare a state of emergency due to the Covid-19 crisis after receiving such a proposal from Muhyiddin last Friday.
The PPBM president met with party and cabinet chiefs in Putrajaya earlier today, and sources said the meeting was to seek their support for next year’s budget.
