PETALING JAYA: The government will increase the tax allowance limit for medical treatment of serious illnesses, as well as a comprehensive health examination, says Finance Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz.
Tengku Zafrul said that the tax allowance limit for medical treatment of serious illnesses would be increased from RM6,000 to RM8,000 for the individual taxpayer, spouse and child.
He added that the tax allowance for a comprehensive health exam would be increased from RM 500 to RM 1,000.
“Tax relief on expenses for medical treatment, special needs and parental care will also be raised from RM5,000 to RM8,000,” he said during the presentation of Budget 2021 in parliament on Friday (November 6).
Tengku Zafrul added that to encourage Malaysians to receive preventive vaccinations to curb the spread of disease, the government would also expand the scope of tax exemption for medical treatment that covers vaccination expenses, such as pneumococcus, influenza and the Covid-19.
He also said that a tax exemption for the cost of vaccination would be granted for staff, spouse and children with a limit of up to RM1,000.
During the Covid-19 pandemic, Tengku Zafrul said the government received comments that mental problems were among the serious problems faced by the public.
As such, he said that an allocation of RM24 thousand would be allocated to handle the problem to mental health, violence prevention and substance abuse and abuse programs, adding that the health ministry’s psychosocial support line received more than 35,000 calls between March. and October 2020, with many complaining of stress, anxiety and depression.
Tengku Zafrul also said that the government will implement a pneumococcal immunization program for children with an allocation of RM90 thousand that is expected to benefit 500,000 children.
“RM6mil will also go towards the acquisition of biological drugs for various types of rheumatological diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis.”
“The government will allocate RM25mil for the home peritoneal dialysis treatment program that aims to improve the quality of treatment of the patient’s kidneys, as well as reduce waiting time and congestion in hospitals,” he said.
