Breathing space for drivers | The star

KUALA LUMPUR: If your driver’s license or road tax expired in February or expires in March, don’t worry.

From the previous extended renewal deadline of April 30, you now have another month, until May 31, to do so.

And if your driver’s license and road tax, technically Competent Driver’s License and Motor Vehicle License, expire in April and May, you can still renew them from June 1 to July 31.

Transport Minister Datuk Seri Dr. Wee Ka Siong said that he has granted exemptions to all private vehicle owners to renew their license and road tax until the mentioned dates after the period of the conditional motion control order. .

“Private vehicle owners can still drive their vehicles as long as the insurance is valid.

“In case of an obstacle, they only need to show their cover note or electronic cover note.

“They will be given time as before to do their renovations,” he said after launching the MyRail5 Unlimited Monthly Travel Pass for Students and the Disabled at KL Sentral here yesterday.

Also present were Deputy Minister of Transport Hasbi Habibollah and KTMB Executive Director Mohd Rani Hisham Samsudin.

On January 29, Dr. Wee granted exemptions to all private vehicle owners from renewing their driver’s license or road tax from February 1 to March 31 due to MCO 2.0.

They were given 30 days after the initial exemption period, which is until April 30.

He said similar waivers have been announced in phases to reduce overcrowding at Department of Highway Transportation (JPJ) offices across the country.

Before this latest exemption, Dr Wee said that the road tax worth RM1.3 million had to be renewed.

“After a discussion with JPJ, I have decided to allow those whose documents expire in March or that expire before that date to renew them through the existing platforms before May 31,” he said.

He added that staffing will be increased at the busy JPJ branches and that they will also open on Saturdays and Sundays.

“We hope this helps with crowd control, as JPJ handles more than 20 million people each year.

“We don’t want a lot of people rushing to the JPJ offices during the conditional MCO and we shouldn’t rush into implementing the waivers.

“We also encourage vehicle owners to do their renovations online to reduce the crowd,” he added.

Dr Wee also said that the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM) will convene a town hall following recent mishaps involving helicopters.

“I have met with the CAAM and the ministry treats this issue with great importance. It is important to remind all training schools and stakeholders to adhere to the flight protocols, ”he said.

On the crash of an Airbus H125 helicopter at Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport in Subang on Wednesday that injured two of the five people on board, Dr. Wee said the investigation will follow the usual standard operating procedure.

“An independent investigation team will poll and present its findings in a report in 30 days, before it is presented to the ministry.

“We do not want to speculate on the cause of the incident,” he added.

On the MyRail5 Unlimited Monthly Travel Pass, Dr. Wee asked Year 1 through Form 6 students and people with disabilities to sign up to enjoy the savings while traveling.

“Many do not realize that there are many students who depend on the train to go to school.

“This special travel pass will have a great impact on rail travelers in the northern and eastern states such as Kelantan and Pahang,” he said.

Meanwhile, KTMB’s Mohd Rani noted that registration for the pass has been open since December 27 last year.

“Due to the MCO and school closings in some states, so far there are 240 active student users across the country and 150 people with disabilities in the Klang Valley (who have signed up).

“We hope that more people will sign up when the schools reopen in April,” he said.

MyRail5 is an initiative announced in Budget 2021 aimed at easing the cost of travel for students and people with disabilities.

The monthly pass is effective for services in the Klang Valley and North KTM Komuter, as well as the KTM Intercity Shuttle Timuran that travels between Kuala Lipis and Tumpat.

Registration for the pass can be done at 13 selected KTM stations within the Klang Valley, including Tanjung Malim Station.

Mohd Rani also said that KTM is moving towards a complete online ticketing and payment system, including for its passenger service, by mid-year.
