PETALING JAYA: Persatuan Patriot Kebangsaan (Patriot) has praised the bravery and swift action taken by VAT69 commandos and Senoi Praaq units of the General Operations Force (GOF) that thwarted a smuggling attempt at the border in Perlis.
A GOF member was shot and killed while his patrol partner was seriously injured after they were in a shootout with smugglers on the Malaysia-Thailand border on Tuesday (November 24).
Kpl Baharuddin Ramli, 54, died at the scene, while Kpl Norihan Tari, 39, has been in critical condition since the 3 am incident at the TS9 post along the border.
“Patriot salutes the brave men of VAT69 and Senoi Praaq. We fully understand the challenges and hardships these men must endure when occupying security positions along international borders.
“Many of our Patriot members had previously served in GOF police units,” said Patriot President Datuk Brig-General (Rtd) Mohamed Arshad Raji (Photo) said in a statement on Wednesday (November 25).
He said that among the difficulties security personnel faced were being deployed for extended periods, away from loved ones, and many deployed for clandestine work in very dangerous circumstances.
“Patriot invites the public to share a thought on the hardships these brave fighters endure. We express our deepest condolences to the family of the late Kpl Baharuddin Ramli, ”said Arshad.
The Senoi Praaq, which in the Semai language means “People of War”, is a feared and respected crack unit made up of Orang Asli police officers within the GOF known for their jungle tracking skills and highly valued by the police. from Malaysia.
Kpl Baharuddin was a member of Senoi Praaq.
He and his partner Kpl Norihan Tari were conducting intelligence work when two groups of smugglers, at least 13 smugglers, jumped on them and opened fire.
GOF members managed to arrest an injured smuggler, while three others were caught by Thai police at a Hatyai hospital later Tuesday.
