Bollywood actress Rhea Chakraborty was arrested for allegedly buying drugs for her ex-boyfriend, actor Sushant Singh Rajput, whose suicide sparked a media storm in India.

The 34-year-old Rajput was found dead in June in his Mumbai apartment, and police said he took his own life. A star with many hit movies to his name, his suicide initially sparked a debate about mental health in the multi-billion dollar industry.

But the Rajput family refuted reports that he was suffering from depression and accused Chakraborty, 28, of stealing his money and harassing him. She has flatly denied the allegations.

Chakraborty was arrested on Tuesday (September 8). The police have also detained other people in connection with the case, including his brother and a member of the Rajput household staff.

India’s main crime fighting agency, the Central Bureau of Investigation, has been investigating his death since last month. The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) was investigating the star’s cannabis use.

“We will oppose requests for bail” for all suspects, NCB director Mutha Ashok Jain told reporters. The actress is in preventive prison until September 22.

The investigation has been in the headlines for months, and the back-and-forth allegations between the Rajput family and Chakraborty have been closely followed by the media.

Some celebrities, including actress Sonam Kapoor and director Anurag Kashyap, accused television channels of conducting a “witch hunt” against Chakraborty.

Born in the eastern state of Bihar, Rajput dropped out of engineering studies to pursue a career in acting and dance.

He got his big break in 2013 with Kai po che, a film about cricket, love and politics that won acclaim at the Berlin film festival.

He was also praised for his portrayal of the Indian cricket hero Mahendra Singh Dhoni in a 2016 hit biopic.

In an interview with AFP that year, Rajput spoke of the emotional roller coaster he experienced while filming the film, which portrayed the breakup Dhoni suffered when the cricketer’s girlfriend died.

“After we did the preparation, in my head I was him and everything that was happening was really affecting me,” he said.

The last Rajput movie was a Hindi remake of the Hollywood romance The fault in our stars, titled Dil bechara (Poor Heart), which premiered in July. – AFP
