SLIM RIVER: Barisan Nasional candidate Mohd Zaidi Aziz is heading to a landslide victory in Slim’s by-elections with a majority of 8,358 against his closest independent candidate, Amir Khusyairi Mohamad Tanusi, according to unofficial results.

Mohd Zaidi obtained 9,980 votes while Amir Khusyairi, representing Parti Pejuang Tanah Air, obtained 1,622 votes. Another former independent teacher, S. Santaharasekaran, obtained 219 surveys.

The unofficial results are based on the results of 45 of the 56 electoral districts.

The polls closed today at 5.30 pm in the 12 polling stations. The Slim state electoral district has 23,094 registered voters.

Slim’s by-elections are being held to fill the vacancy created by the death of 59-year-old four-term Assemblyman Mohd Khusairi Abdul Talib, who was Tanjung Malim Umno’s division chief. He died on July 15 after a heart attack.

In the 2018 general elections, he was re-elected with a majority of 2,183 votes against the PPBM candidate, Mohd Amran Ibrahim, who was participating in a PKR candidacy, and the PAS candidate, Muhammad Zulfadli Zainal.

The by-election is the second to be held during the Covid-19 pandemic. A by-election for Chini’s seat in Pahang was held last month. Barisan Nasional won it.

The results of the by-elections will not influence the position of the Perak state government formed by Perikatan Nasional. It has 33 seats in the 59-member state assembly, which comprises BN (Umno) with 25, PPBM 5 and PAS 3.

The opposition is made up of Pakatan Harapan with 24 seats from DAP 16, Amanah 5 and PKR 3, with one member from Gerakan and one independent.
