Baggies boss Slaven Bilic received a red card for facing referee Mike Dean.

But an incident without the ball resulted in former Arsenal defender Gibbs hitting Rodriguez, signed from Real Madrid this summer, in the face.

The Colombian forward collided with Gibbs after a late challenge that provoked a scandalous response from the West Brom side.

To make matters worse, Baggies boss Slaven Bilic received a red card for facing referee Mike Dean.

Bilic was heard repeatedly asking Dean to ‘check the foul’, which may have been a reference to Rodriguez’s late barge on Gibbs.

He said, “Check the foul for us and the red card. Next time it kills us.”

Dean repeated “Go away”, but Billic replied: “Next time kill us. You can kill us too.” Before he was expelled.

West Brom had taken an early lead within ten minutes after Grady Diangana’s solo career was finished off after he hit Jordan Pickford.

England stopper Pickford faced criticism online for the goal that pierced the palms of his hands.

But their blushes cooled at the half-hour mark when Dominic Calvert-Lewin scored back-to-back goals, having led Everton’s win against Tottenham last week.

Initially, the forward’s movement a few meters from the marked goal was declared offside, but after a VAR verification, the tie was awarded.

Rodriguez, moments before his altercation with Gibbs, put the Toffees in the lead.

Having picked up the ball just on the edge of the box, the playmaker placed it on his left foot and placed it in the bottom corner.

Rodriguez started again on the right flank, facing him against Gibbs for the first 45 minutes.

But after Gibbs returned the pass to a teammate in overtime, Rodriguez came in with late contact.

The defender immediately reacted by hitting Rodríguez in the face, causing him to fall and Gibbs received a direct red.
