KUALA LUMPUR: The merger of Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) with Muafakat Nasional (MN) to form a “larger coalition” was a necessary step to help Malaysia “move forward”, Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin said on Tuesday (8 September) at night.
Speaking in his capacity as party chairman, Mr. Muhyiddin said that he and his party planned to work with others to ensure that a stronger “front line” could be formed in terms of both government and party.
“We have planned to work with other friends, to work together in a political struggle to be selfless and to form a front line that can work together in politics and government.
“It can’t be helped. We need to have a new policy in the new normal and I think Malaysians will support our fight,” he said.

Mr. Muhyiddin added that he had not hesitated to join Muafakat Nasional when invited because he felt it necessary.
“When I was invited to join Muafakat Nasional to be a bigger chapter, without hesitation, I accepted. Because the important thing is to move on.
“We need to work together without jealousy. It is important for us to have a more secure future, ”she said.
“To ensure we are successful, we must always help each other and I believe we have already done so. Let us continue to do this to create a front line made up of integrity and trust.”
On the other hand, Muhyiddin urged the hundreds of party members present at the celebration to work as if the next general election were happening the next day.
“If we work hard, when the elections come around, the people will give us the mandate and support Perikatan Nasional.
“Do not ask me when the general elections are, the important thing is that we work hard as are tomorrow’s elections. I hope you understand what I mean ”, he emphasized.

Bersatu was formed in 2016 after Muhyiddin and former Prime Minister Dr. Mahathir Mohamad teamed up to fight the 1Malaysia Development Berhad scandal.
However, in February this year, Muhyiddin and Mahathir got into a fight after the former’s faction lobbied for UMNO to be allowed to join a coalition with Bersatu.
This led to the resignation of Dr. Mahathir as Prime Minister and resulted in the appointment of Muhyiddin as Prime Minister of Malaysia as of March 1.
