Benteng’s LD cluster extends to Tawau prison, seven cases detected, says Director General of Health (updated)

PUTRAJAYA: The Benteng Lahad Datu (LD) Covid-19 group in Sabah has spread to Tawau prison some 150 km away, with seven cases linked to the group.

Health Director General Tan Sri Dr. Noor Hisham Abdullah said a convict in prison who tested positive for Covid-19 on Sept. 1 was found to have close ties to cases from Benteng’s LD group.

“He (patient 9,351) has a record of being at Lahad Datu police headquarters for a case mention. There, he had close contact with the two index cases (patient 9,344 and patient 9,345) in this group, ”Dr. Noor Hisham said in a statement on Thursday (September 3).

Patient 9,351 is a 43-year-old Malaysian.

Dr Noor Hisham said the Health Ministry was able to track six more cases – four men from the Philippines and two men from Malaysia aged 17 to 49 – in Tawau prison, which were among the country’s 14 new cases on Thursday. .

“Four of these new cases also had a history of travel to Lahad Datu Police Headquarters and all had close contacts with the index cases.

“They returned to Tawau Prison on August 28 and infected two more inmates. They were all asymptomatic and had been admitted to Tawau Hospital, ”said Dr. Noor Hisham.

Benteng’s LD group was first announced by the Health Ministry on September 1, where seven positive cases for Covid-19 were found following an assessment of inmates conducted at the Lahad Datu police headquarters.

Six undocumented immigrants, four from the Philippines and two from Indonesia, and one Malaysian were among the first seven cases, and all were admitted to Lahad Datu Hospital.

Currently, there are 14 cluster-related cases in total.

Dr. Noor Hisham said that so far, 336 people have been screened under the group, which included 121 detainees, 83 members of prison staff, 68 detainee relatives and staff, 61 police officers and three government officials.

He said 123 people tested negative, while the results of another 199 are still pending.

In addition to Benteng’s LD group, three other groups also reported new cases: Tawar (three cases), Bunga (two), and Telaga (one).

Two cases were detected in the Tawar group of the Enhanced Motion Control (MCO) order currently being enforced in Amanjaya, Kedah.

The group now has 78 confirmed cases, scattered in both Kedah and Penang.

Currently, the Bunga group has six confirmed cases, of which two were found in Negri Sembilan and four in Selangor.

The group is linked to the crew of a ship in Port Dickson aboard a ship that has traveled to a port in Singapore.

The country’s total cases since the outbreak began has risen to 9,374.

There were no new deaths while four more patients were discharged.

Active cases are now up to 163 cases.
