Ben Chilwell scored and assisted in his Premier League debut for Chelsea when Frank Lampard’s side spotted a stubborn Crystal Palace at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea had been frustrated after the first half ended goalless, but the full-back appeared in the right area to give the hosts a competitive advantage five minutes after the restart, taking advantage of a poor clearance by Mamadou Sakho.

Chilwell had impressed in Chelsea’s Carabao Cup qualifiers, but had to be patient for his first league appearance following a heel injury.
And he made up for lost time when he set up Chelsea’s second, with his perfect cross for Kurt Zouma, who doubled Chelsea’s lead about 15 minutes later with an impressive header.

With confidence growing in the team, Jorginho put the hosts out of sight after Tammy Abraham was brought down by Tyrick Mitchell. Minutes later, the Italian scored another home penalty after Sakho’s foul on Kai Havertz, after captain Cesar Azpilicueta blurred a situation between Abraham and the scorer, with the former desperate to take the penalty.
SPEAKING POINT – Chelsea remains a work in progress, despite a convincing result
Frank Lampard had a plethora of dangerous forwards on the field and yet it was two goals from defenders and two penalties that won the match for Chelsea. It’s a convincing result for the Blues and yet it was far from a convincing attacking performance. Much of his game, especially in the first half, was too predictable. They played at a slow tempo, attempting too many passes when one shot was the best option.
Eventually, they found the breakthrough in a badass way and the floodgates opened as Palace undid all of his determined defensive work in the first half by making mistake after mistake after the restart.

This new Chelsea team is still a work in progress. But one player who seems to have adapted quickly is Ben Chilwell. He was the game’s most prominent player by some distance, always advancing on the overlap and his deliveries proved deadly.
MAN OF THE MATCH – Ben Chilwell (Chelsea)
The 23-year-old already looks like a much better option for Lampard than Marcos Alonso. He knows the Premier League inside out and has caught up with Chelsea remarkably quickly after his injury.
