KOTA KINABALU: Batu Sapi’s MP Datuk VK Liew was buried in the Nirvana Memorial Park in Telipok, about 25 km from here, on Monday (October 5).
Liew received a funeral for a Catholic priest at his home in Likas before being taken on his last trip at 2.30pm to the memorial park.
The trip was delayed due to flooding along the road following heavy rains overnight.
The funeral service of the permanent president of the Parti Warisan Sabah and the former federal minister was broadcast live via the Facebook page of their Batu Sapi constituency.
The public had been asked not to attend the funeral service in light of current concerns about Covid-19 and to observe standard operating procedure (SOP) at public gatherings.
Liew leaves behind his wife Datin Lindai Lee and four children.
Initially admitted to Jesselton Medical Center by a sliding disc before the September 12 nomination day for the Sabah elections, he was transferred to Gleneagles Hospital for additional medical care.
However, his condition worsened when he was diagnosed with a lung infection and he finally succumbed to his illness on October 2.
Liew was previously president of the Liberal Democratic Party (PLD) between 2006 and 2014, but was overthrown in an internal power struggle.
He left the party to join Warisan in early 2018 and became the party’s successful candidate for Batu Sapi.
A by-election for Batu Sapi is expected to be held in the next 60 days, as required by electoral laws.
He was the electoral director of Warisan Plus, but was unable to carry out his political work after his hospitalization.
