PETALING JAYA: Batu Sapi’s parliamentary parliamentary elections must be contested by candidates independent or not linked to any political party, says PAS Central Dewan Ulama.

Dewan Ulama proposed that the pending by-elections in Sabah be held without physical congregations, campaign rooms or operations rooms, with only voters authorized to enter and exit the parliamentary constituency on voting day.

In addition, he stated that this is to maintain the spirit of democracy but to ensure that parties do not campaign and give rise to Covid-19 cases, as happened during the recent Sabah state elections.

PAS Central Dewan Ulama proposes that the Electoral Commission find a suitable solution to carry out the Batu Sapi parliamentary elections in accordance with the new rules to prevent the transmission of Covid-19.

“In accordance with article 54, paragraph 1, of the Federal Constitution, by-elections due to the vacancy of a parliamentary seat are in line with democracy and the right of the people to elect their leader in their district cannot be denied electoral state or parliamentary.

“We ask that independent candidates or candidates who are not linked to any political party be given priority to ensure that it does not become a party on behalf of the parties to respect netizens who are concerned about the current situation of the Covid pandemic -19 in Sabah, “said PAS Central Dewan Ulama’s chief information officer, Mohd Nor Hamzah, in a statement on Saturday (October 10).

“This is a temporary solution as it is the right of citizens to vote for their representative who will represent their voices in Dewan Rakyat or state assemblies.

“The by-election has to happen, but it has to be in new rules and if it feels appropriate to conduct the voting online then it is not wrong to do so as long as it is transparent and not manipulated.

“According to the new rules, there should be no nominating congregations, no physical advertisement of candidates, no physical campaign of candidates, voters or anyone else, no one but the voters should be allowed in and out to the parliamentary constituency and there should be no booths or party operations rooms, “Mohd Nor said.

Barisan Nasional, Parti Cinta Sabah and Sabah STAR have announced that they will not participate in the by-elections to prevent further Covid-19 cases in Sabah.

Batu Sapi’s parliamentary seat was vacated after the death of Datuk Liew Vui Keong of Parti Warisan Sabah on October 2.
