PUTRAJAYA: The base jumping training session held here yesterday had received permission from the manager of the building in question and the Putrajaya Corporation (PPj) as the organizer and local authority.
Director of PPj’s Corporate Communications Division Tengku Aina Tengku Ismail Shah said that apart from that, the Malaysian Special Rescue and Assistance Team (SMART) was also briefed on the session and its staff were also deployed to be in wait in place.
“The training has also taken into account all aspects of safety and the weather. Wind direction indicators have been placed on the building and the landing area.
“Based on the direction and strength of the wind during the incident, it was safe to make the jump,” he said in a statement here today.
She was commenting on an incident in which a man died while conducting a base jumping test at the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development (KPWKM) building yesterday.
In the 5.35pm incident, Azuan Taharudin, 49, along with seven other BASE jumpers from the BASE ABABIL Club were training for a performance in conjunction with Federal Territories Day 2021.
Tengku Aina said that during the jump, Azuan was said to have lost control of his parachute and hit the building’s windows several times before falling.
Azuan, who had more than 18 years of skydiving experience, had done more than 300 base jumps.
“He had also been involved in many jumping events held in Putrajaya, such as the 62 Kibaran Jalur Gemilang jump, the Putrajaya 25th silver anniversary jump, the Putrajaya international hot air balloon and the Putrajaya BASE 2020 jump,” he said.
Tengku Aina said that PPj also expressed his deepest condolences to Azuan’s families. – Called
