MIRI: Native communities in the Barium Highlands of northern Sarawak have been placed on a Covid-19 red alert after a villager tested positive for the disease.

Native communities of the Kelabit ethnic group in the region have been told to cooperate with health teams that were dispatched to the settlements on Sunday (October 4).

The president of the Rurum Kelabit Association, Dr. Philip Raja, today called on his communities in the Bario highlands to impose a blockade of the movement for themselves.

“A person from Kampung Padalih tested positive for Covid-19 while he was in Kuala Lumpur on his way to Iraq to work with his oil and gas company. We contacted him and discovered that he was at his home in the village from September 16 to September 21, “he said.

Dr. Philip added that the man then drove to Miri and stayed at his family’s home in Permajaya from September 21-25 before returning to Kampung Padalih on September 25.

He added that the man stayed at his home in Kampung Padalih until September 28 before driving to Miri and flying to KLIA on September 29.

Kpg Padalih is about 10 hours by wooden road from Miri.

“He was tested for Covid-19 and his results came back positive on October 1. We have urged people throughout the Bario highlands to be under motion control,” said Dr. Philip.

The man who tested positive for Covid-19 is now isolated at Sg Buloh Hospital.

He said that health teams are being transferred in helicopters from the Fire and Rescue Department to carry out contact tracing and medical examinations.

In Miri city, health teams are also tracking contacts to find out their close contacts at home here, the state’s Disaster Relief Management Committee said.

He said eight close contacts have been identified in Miri so far, adding that they are undergoing health tests.
