PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Bar Association has urged the Attorney General’s Office to provide details of the reasoning behind the prosecution’s withdrawal of its case against former Federal Territories Minister Tengku Adnan Mansor.
Tengku Adnan, charged with a ringgit 1 million corruption case, was granted a conditional exemption when the prosecution said it did not wish to proceed due to “new developments”, which was later revealed as a new investigation into allegations against a witness.
The president of the Malaysian Bar Association, Salim Bashir, said the prosecutor must provide valid reasons for his decision. “It is also very concerning that a time frame has not been provided to further investigate this ‘new development’,” he said.
He said the public has a right to know the detailed explanation behind the withdrawal of charges in matters of public interest.
Deputy Prosecutor Julia Ibrahim, who requested the conditional release of Tengku Adnan, said the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) needed to conduct further investigations.
“We are not sure how long MACC needs to investigate,” he said. The decision to proceed with the case would be made “after the new problem is resolved.”
