KUALA LUMPUR: Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) training director Wong Choong Hann tested positive for Covid-19.
Choong Hann, who is asymptomatic, is currently in a period of self-isolation according to the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Youth and Sports, and the quarantine protocol of the National Sports Council.
According to the statement issued by BAM, in addition to Choong Hann, 39 flyers and coaches who underwent the mandatory swab test before the tournament tested negative.
Following consultation with relevant government agencies, the Malaysian badminton team has been cleared to depart for Bangkok, Thailand, for the Asian leg of the World Badminton Federation (BWF) tour as scheduled tomorrow.
“The Malaysian players remain committed and determined to do their best in the name and pride of Jalur Gemilang.
“Furthermore, it is Choong Hann’s wish that the players who put months of hard work into the Akademi Badminton Malaysia (ABM) compete in their first post-pandemic tournaments in Thailand,” the statement said.
Malaysian badminton players will also observe a quarantine period until January 11 as per tournament requirements prior to the Yonex Thailand Open from January 12 to 17, followed by the Toyota Thailand Open from January 19 to 24.
They are also scheduled to undergo a series of swab tests upon arrival on the 4th, the 9th, the 13th and the 18th in Thailand.
Following qualification for the BWF World Tour finals, further swab testing will take place on the 22nd and 26th, and the equipment will also be tested for three days before returning home.
The statement said ABM at Bukit Kiara had undergone a detailed disinfection process today.
