Badminton: BWF likely to stick to existing ranking plan

PETALING JAYA: Ferries can afford to smile as the World Badminton Federation (BWF) is not going to introduce a new one-year qualification period for next year’s Tokyo Olympics. Instead, they are likely to continue where they left off.

The world body suspended all tournaments after All-England in Birmingham in March due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

After the decision, the world body was unable to complete the last six weeks of its one-year qualification period, which was scheduled to end on April 30.

All tournaments during that time, the German Open, the Swiss Open, the Malaysian Open, the Indian Open, the Singapore Open and the Asian Badminton Championship, were canceled or postponed.

The BWF is known to be looking to use the same tournaments as the Olympic qualifiers next year.

“The world body held its council meeting online and they are ready to resume the qualification period next year. They will only continue with the qualifying tournaments that have been affected in recent weeks, “said a source.

“This is considered fair since many athletes have worked hard to qualify since last year.”

BWF is expected to make an official announcement this week and publish the revised schedule.
