PETALING JAYA: With just two weeks to go, the long-awaited resumption of the World Tour in Bangkok has taken a heavy hit. 19-24 and the January 27-31 World Tour Finals will lose some of their luster with China bringing out all of their best players.

The Chinese Badminton Association (CBA) has withdrawn its equipment after failing to obtain authorization from its government to leave the country due to the emergence of a new Covid-19 strain around the world. The chairman of the Badminton Association of Thailand (BAT), Patama Leeswadtrakul, said they understood the situation in China.

The CBA was eager to send its shuttles, but its authorities have prohibited its citizens from traveling outside the country.

“The CBA had already confirmed their hotel accommodation and plane tickets, the players were supposed to go to Bangkok next Tuesday,” Patama said on local sports portal siamsport.co.th. With the exception of reigning Olympic Games men’s singles champion Chen Long, a total of 20 shuttles had entered for the Bangkok clashes, comprising six singles and seven doubles pairs.

These were Shi Yuqi and Lu Guangzu male individual shuttles; Chen Yufei, He Bingjiao, Wang Zhiyi and Han Yue (female singles); Li Junhui-Liu Yuchen, Liu Cheng-Huang Kaixiang and Wang Chang-Di Zijian (men’s doubles); Chen Qingchen-Jia Yifan and Liu Xuanxuan Xia Yuting (women’s doubles) and Zheng Siwei-Huang Yaqiong and Wang Yi-lyu-Huang Dongping (mixed doubles).

Qingchen-Yifan and Siwei-Yaqiong are seeded in their respective events.
