BALIK PULAU: A newborn girl who was thrown from the balcony of a flat fourth-floor unit in Bayan Lepas on Wednesday (May 13), according to reports from her own mother, is in stable condition at Penang Hospital.

Balik Pulau OCPD Supt A. Anbalagan said the baby was currently in the intensive care unit (ICU) at Penang Hospital.

“According to a doctor, the baby suffered a brain injury and there is a crack in his head.

“She also suffered a liver injury and will be referred to a specialist.

“Both the baby and the suspect are in Penang Hospital for treatment.

“We detained the suspect’s boyfriend to facilitate investigations,” he said in a statement Thursday (May 14).

On Wednesday (May 13), an 18-year-old store clerk allegedly threw her newborn baby off the balcony of her apartment here to prevent her parents from discovering that she had given birth.

Supt Anbalagan said the teenager admitted that she gave birth to the girl around 7 a.m. on Wednesday (May 13).

“The suspect’s parents were in Kelantan when the incident occurred, and her two brothers who stayed with her were also unaware.

“The suspect hid her pregnancy from her family.

“She later revealed that the baby’s father was her boyfriend of 18 years,” she said.

Supt Anbalagan said police were alerted to the incident around 10 a.m. on Wednesday (May 13), after someone heard an object fall onto the roof.

“According to an independent witness at the scene, a flat occupant on the ground floor heard a loud sound when something fell on the roof of his house at 8am on Wednesday morning,” he said.

He added that an investigative officer, along with the forensic team from the Penang Contingent Police Headquarters, went to the scene and found the newborn in a backpack downstairs behind the apartment block.

“The case will be investigated under Section 317 of the Penal Code for exposure and abandonment of a child under the age of 12 by a parent or caregiver or custodian,” he said.
