KUALA LUMPUR: Chief Minister of the Economy and International Trade and Industry, Mohamed Azmin Ali, is optimistic about the future of Putrajaya’s trade ties with Washington following Joe Biden’s victory in the US presidential race amid major challenges facing the global economy.
“We are optimistic that Malaysia-US trade relations will continue to be strong and vibrant and that the US business community will continue to explore new opportunities for increased direct investment in Malaysia,” he said.
Azmin’s comments came as Biden, a former two-term vice president under Barack Obama and a 36-year Senate veteran, won the US presidential election to be the 46th president of the United States.
“I would like to extend my sincere congratulations to President-elect Biden on his election as the 46th President of the United States,” Azmin said in a statement today.
He also congratulated Vice President-elect Kamala Harris on being elected the first female Vice President of the United States.
Azmin said that Biden was chosen at a particularly pivotal moment in history when humanity around the world is battling a virulent pandemic of unprecedented proportions.
“Malaysia looks forward to the leadership of the United States to face the devastating impact of Covid-19 and to re-chart the future of the United States trajectory in the geopolitical landscape as a beacon for world peace and security,” he said.
He said the international court and the ministry of industry also looked forward to a fruitful partnership between ASEAN and the United States, particularly in efforts to revitalize the regional economy, as well as greater U.S. involvement in promoting free trade and engagement multilateral among Asian members.
