Mohamed Azmin Ali said that the prime minister briefed them on the latest developments and what they needed to prepare for in the parliamentary session.

KUALA LUMPUR: The Minister of International Trade and Industry, Mohamed Azmin Ali, has tried to downplay the importance of today’s meeting of Perikatan Nasional (PN) leaders at a prominent hotel in the capital, stating that it was a meeting “normal”.

Prime Minister Muhyiddn Yassin was accompanied by Perikatan Nasional (PN) ministers and leaders at around 12:20 pm. The discussions are believed to have centered on the 2021 Budget, which will be presented on Friday.

“It is just normal advice among heads of government,” Azmin said after the meeting ended.

“The prime minister briefed us on the latest developments and what we need to prepare for the next (parliamentary) session.

“It’s just an update,” added Azmin, who is one of the four main ministers of the PN government.

The PN coalition has a slim majority in Parliament and there has been intense speculation that MPs could vote against the budget, which would automatically lead to the resignation of Muhyiddin and his cabinet and pave the way for a general election.

Among the party leaders present at the meeting are Umno President Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, PAS President Abdul Hadi Awang, Transport Minister and MCA President Wee Ka Siong, MIC President S Vigneswaran , and PBS President Maximus Ongkili.

Also present were the Prime Minister of Sarawak and President of GPS, Abang Johari Openg, as well as the Chief Deputy Minister of Sabah and President of STAR, Jeffrey Kitingan.

Meanwhile, leaders of PKR, DAP and Amanah are in Putrajaya for a meeting with Finance Minister Tengku Zafrul Aziz on Pakatan Harapan’s proposals for the 2021 budget.
