Avoid any choice, if possible

PUTRAJAYA: The Ministry of Health has reiterated today that it is important to avoid any choice for the time being to curb the spread of Covid-19.

Health Director General Tan Sri Dr. Noor Hisham Abdullah (pix) said the ministry was always concerned if an election was held, be it a by-election, a state election or a general election.

He said this was demonstrated by the increase in the number of positive cases in Sabah after the recent state elections were held.

“After the Sabah state elections, we were able to see an increase in cases and this has made it difficult to contain the spread of Covid-19.

“If possible, it is crucial to avoid other elections,” he said at a press conference on Covid-19 developments, here, today.

Dr. Noor Hisham was responding to the Emergency Proclamation for the Batu Sapi constituency by Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah today, effectively postponing the by-election for the seat. .

The Electoral Commission had initially set December 5 as the voting day for the Batu Sapi parliamentary elections.

Meanwhile, when asked if the increase in cases in various clusters such as Hentian in the Klang Valley, Tembok (Kedah) and Sandakan Prison (Sabah) was due to the accumulation of samples, Dr. Noor Hisham said it was the detection result made in accordance with improved standard operating procedures to prevent the spread of Covid-19.

He said that in Sandakan Prison, for example, new cases were detected in the second examination after quarantine or the examination before prisoners were transferred or released.

“We have now identified the transmission of Covid-19 among foreign workers, so we increased the detection at construction sites, factories, etc. We urge employers to cooperate in the selection exercise, ”he said.

Meanwhile, Dr. Noor Hisham said that the increase in positive Covid-19 cases on certain dates was due to the results of the detection of clusters recently identified as Damanlela Cluster at a construction site in Kuala Lumpur.

“What is certain is that if we can identify a group and trace contacts, God willing, it can be controlled.

“When we do the screening, the number of cases would increase based on what we could see in the prisons. So it would seem like a jump in positive cases, but this was not permanent, but because of the screening carried out ”, he said. – Called
