Authorities cleaning up oil spill in Port Dickson

PETALING JAYA: Several agencies have committed to clean up a 2 km long oil spill in waters off Pantai Cermin in Port Dickson, Negri Sembilan and the Melaka enclave of Tanjung Tuan.

Minister of Environment and Water Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man (Photo) said drones have also been deployed to track the source of contamination.

“This case is being investigated under Section 27 of the Environmental Quality Act 1974 which carries a maximum fine of RM500,000 or a maximum penalty of five years in jail or both,” it said in a statement on Tuesday (October 13 ).

On Monday (October 12) there were several reports about the oil spill.

The Port Dickson District Beach Cleanup Action Committee and Alor Gajah District Disaster Management Committee were activated to clean up and remove the oil.

Both the Port Dickson and Alor Gajah districts and ground offices led the clean-up operations with the help of the Department of the Environment of both states, the Malaysian Department of the Navy, the Malaysian Maritime Agency (MMA), the Force Malaysian Civil Defense, the Department of Fisheries, the Department of Forestry, the Malaysian Security Council and the police.

“The research team from the Department of Environment has collected samples and sent them to the Department of Chemistry for analysis.

“The Department of the Environment and MMA are also involved in surveillance activities to find the source of contamination,” he said.
