PETALING JAYA: The police will mobilize assets and personnel from the CID and the narcotics division to reinforce security on the border between Malaysia and Thailand, Bernama reported, attributing the statement to Inspector General of Police Abdul Hamid Bador.

This follows the incident of the shooting at the border near Padang Besar, Perlis, between members of the General Operations Force (GOF) and a group of smugglers on Tuesday, in which one GOF member was killed and another seriously injured.

It was also reported that a GOF staff suffered a minor injury after being shot while on duty at the border near Bukit Kayu Hitam last night.

Eighteen suspects, three Thais and 15 Malaysians, have been sent to pretrial detention to assist in the investigation of the incident in Tuesday’s shooting.

Bernama also quoted the director of Bukit Aman’s Department of Internal Security and Public Order, Abd Rahim Jaafar, as saying that the GOF in charge of controlling the border will change its strategy and patrol system to curb smuggling activities.

Without revealing details, Rahim said the change was due to frequent shooting incidents in the area that caused injuries to GOF personnel.

In addition to tightening control at the border so smugglers cannot penetrate, he said, GOF personnel will patrol the fenced area for about 30 to 40 km and stay in contact with Thai authorities.
