Assassin’s Creed Valhalla will launch this year on consoles (including Xbox Series X and PS5) and PC. For PC gamers, Ubisoft will take a similar route to its other recent games, bypassing Steam in favor of the Epic Games Store, at least initially, in a launch structure similar to the publisher’s other recent games.
Ubisoft has confirmed that Valhalla will only be sold at a third-party store, Epic Games Store. The game will also be released on PC via Ubisoft’s Uplay service. The return of the franchise after a year of absence is sure to be a huge draw for Epic’s digital store, which has seen a growing number of third-party games as exclusive over the past year.
Valhalla will become the first major installment in the Assassin’s Creed series to skip Steam. It will also be the first game in the series to launch for next generation platforms. Assassin’s Creed Odyssey 2018 and the rest of the previous games are available to buy on Steam now.
The Division 2 was the first great Ubisoft game to be released as an exclusive on the Epic Games Store. At the Game Developers Conference in 2019, Ubisoft and Epic extended their publishing agreement for future titles, and we now know that one of them is Assassin’s Creed Valhalla.
The Division 2 was never released on Steam, but the exact terms of Ubisoft’s deal with Epic for Valhalla are unknown. Many of the other epic exclusives, such as 2K’s Borderlands 3, were finally released on Steam.
Ubisoft is avoiding Steam due to its business model. Vice President Chris Early said in an interview in the New York Times that the Steam business model is “unrealistic.” He added: “It does not reflect where the world is today in terms of game distribution.”
Steam generally maintains 30 percent of game sales, and 70 percent goes to developers / publishers. In contrast, the Epic Games Store offers much more to people who make games; At Epic Games Store, 88 percent of revenue goes back to developers.
