2021 Toyota Thailand Open semi-final: Ashwini Ponnappa and Satwiksairaj fall out of the semi-finals of the Thailand Open, The Indian mixed doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Ashwini Ponnappa have been eliminated from the Thailand Open after losing in the semifinal on Saturday.
Thailand’s Dechapol Puavaranukroh and Sapsiree Taerattanachai reached the final after beating Rankireddy and Ponnappa 22-20, 18-21, 21-12 in the match that lasted about an hour. After losing the very close first game, the Indian pair shot out to claim the second game despite strong challenge from the opponents.
In the final game of the match, both teams gave their all in an effort to march towards the summit clash, but the Indian duo failed to overtake the local pair. The Thai pair went into halftime mid-game with a two-point lead and continued their dominance for the remainder of the match and won the game 21-12.
Rankireddy and Ponnappa were the only Indian players left in the competition after others failed to win their respective matches in the competition.
Earlier in the day, Satwiksairaj and his male doubles partner Chirag Shetty lost in the semi-final.
Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik of Malaysia defused the Indian attack in straight sets 21-18, 21-18 to sail into the main event final. Satwiksairaj and Chirag were defeated by the eight-seeded Malaysian pair despite their valiant effort in the semi-final clash.
In the men’s doubles semi-finals, Satwik and Chirag Shetty lost to the eighth seeded pair of Aaron Chia and Malaysia’s Soo Woi in straight sets 21-18, 21-18.
Satwik and Ashwini Ponappa will now play in the mixed doubles semi-finals. In the semi-finals, Satwik and Ponappa will face the Thai couple of Dechapol and Sapsiree.
Earlier on Friday, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy stormed the men’s doubles and mixed semi-finals at the Thailand Open in Bangkok on Friday. Satwik and Ashwini Ponappa became the first Indian mixed couple to reach the semi-finals of a Super-1000 event.
They defeated Malaysian Olympic silver medalists Chan Peng Soon and Goh Liu Ying 18-21, 24-22, 22-20. Later, Satwik and Chirag Shetty defeated Ong Yew Sin and Teo Ee Yi of Malaysia 21-19, 24-22.
