PETALING JAYA: As the unemployment rate is expected to rise further, Human Resources Minister Datuk Seri M. Saravanan says Malaysians must change their mindset and accept whatever job they may get.

He said that it was better to work in so-called 3D jobs (dirty, dangerous and difficult) than to be unemployed while one could put food on the table.

“There must be a change of mentality for the rakyat to accept any job (available). There are enough opportunities, ”he said in a live conversation with Umno President Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi on Facebook on Tuesday (May 12).

Saravanan said the ministry and its agencies, such as the Human Resources Development Fund (HRDF) and the Skills Development Fund Corporation (PTPK) would organize training to train and improve workers.

“Before this, foreign workers worked only in the lowest sectors. But today, they have become skilled workers. These sectors should be taken over by the locals,” he said.

Malaysia reported a 17.1% increase in unemployed people to 610,500 in March this year as a result of the Movement Control Order (MCO) that affected companies as the government sought to minimize the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Saravanan said that all parties, employees and employers, must be honest and not threaten each other, as it was no longer the usual.

He asked why some employers preferred to hire foreigners rather than locals, and said he believed that some employers preferred foreign workers since they would not have to make contributions to the Employer Provident Fund (EPF) and the Social Security Organization (Socso ).

“I only ask employers not to take advantage of them. Pay the workers a good salary and they will work. Don’t give the excuse that a small percentage of locals don’t want to work, “he said.

He also urged Malaysians to consider work abroad opportunities, giving the example of Japan, where he said the basic salary was RM8,500 for lower-level work.

He said he was in talks with the Japanese embassy about job opportunities there.

“All Malaysians in general have to change their mindset and accept the change to survive. This is not the time to talk about plans and dreams. That has to be put aside, ”he said.
